Workshop Overview

Making the most of your hobby is important. Doing this in a limited space can be challenging, and with modern living spaces not being as big as they use to be, modellers find themselves exploring other aspects to enhance the hobby within their view. These aspects can include super detailing locomotives and rolling stock, modelling a highly detailed scene/diorama or shelf layout, and weathering and the use of graffiti (era dependant) to name a few methods.

If you take pride in trying to get things right and have your scale models look as close to the 1:1 models as we can get, the process of weathering adds a tremendous amount of detail to any model if done well, and it does not have to be daunting in any way.

If you have ever wanted to learn how that get that boxcar roof rusty like the real thing, or make that hopper road weary, then weathering is great skill to learn.

This workshop aims to help develop basic weathering skills; without the use of an airbrush, using powders, inks, and washes, along with a few “outside the box” methods.

What skills will you take away from the workshop?

  • Weathering Roofs, and getting that rusty/ grimey affect.
  • Adding grime and dirt to wheels and overall underbody.
  • Using washes to highlight structural details.
  • How to mix paint for specific applications.
  • Which brush is the right brush to use? Which paint is the right kind?
  • Understanding Era specific details and references.
  • The use of graffiti, both with a marker and with waterslide decals.
  • By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a model that you have weathered.

What to Bring – This is a hands on Workshop!

  • Bring your own model(s) on which to practice.
There will be time to work on at least 2 models.
  • We recommend that you bring models you are willing to experiment with (mistakes can be made!)
  • We ask that you only bring rolling stock (ie freight cars) and refrain from bringing locomotives, and passenger cars or cabooses as they require window masking. Buildings are an acceptable medium as well, but again we ask that you choose something with minimal windows.
