Modelling Canadian Pacific MOW Boxcars
1970 to the Present
Summary
A look at modeling typical Canadian Pacific Maintenance of Way Boxcars in HO scale using available models, parts and supplies. The period covered is the CP Rail era to roughly the present.
Description
Canadian Pacific, like most railroads, used equipment that was surplus to revenue needs, often at the end of their service life for maintenance of way service. These cars often take on a character of their own showing the effects of their long service life and any modifications for work service. Using photographs from my collection along with examples of my modeling, I will talk about the different cars, their modifications and provide some advice on how to do your own CP MOW boxcars as it has become much easier in the last decade or so. I will talk to typical modifications and the different models available to work with. The focus will be on 40’ boxcars, but there will be discussions on miniboxes, outside braced boxcars, silk cars, and some 50’ cars in company service. I will bring some models along for the display room as well. Whether you put together MOW trains or just want a few distinct cars to set off on a siding, this will hopefully give you some inspiration.
