Summary
At its core consisting is simple. Run multiple locos at the same time. That said, how we operate our locos has evolved over the years. We often want to do much more than run fixed loco consists.
In my case, I wanted to ensure that I could use approaches that would support on-the-fly consisting, would be super easy to build/break, would provide flexibility, and allow me to use all of my investment in sound decoders.
Come and share your experience.
Description
Consisting might be one of the most poorly considered aspects of DCC operations. Every system supports one or more ways of consisting but are they really suited to the needs of today’s modeller? With a clear understanding of the key principles, effective use of consisting tools is straightforward but still much confusion remains.
I will share my journey to unravel the in’s and out’s of consisting, the various approaches taken by the different manufactures, current and planned NMRA standards, in my quest to find an approach that meets my operating druthers.
Are you interested in using the features of your decoders that support prototypical operations? Braking? On-the-fly momentum adjustments? Prototypical lighting configurations? Modern multi-unit DPU operations? Are you considering what command system to use for your layout? What throttles you would like to use? Have you ever considered that your consisting operations might impact your decisions? This clinic is for you.
About John
John models in HO, modern era, CP and CN (with a good sprinkling of foreign power). His engineering training and fascination with how things work and how to make them work better regularly sends him happily down rabbit holes in his model railroading. He currently has three layouts in various stages of completion at home and has managed to get about three more or less “complete” in the past. He is an active member of the local model railroading community and has been a member of the RMMBC Committee for many years. He loves this hobby.
