Summary
Join me on my journey to make the most of ESU sound decoders for prototypical loco operations. I will share five years of tips and tricks.

Description
ESU sound decoders (both V4 and V5) provide a comprehensive set of features that provide for unparalleled flexibility for modelling the prototypical operation of modern diesel locomotives. As I have explored the capabilities of these decoders and applied them to my roster of modern day (1980s to current) diesel locomotives, over time I have refined my configuration of these decoders with two objectives in mind: (a) allow for prototypical performance over a range of operational scenarios, while (b) still keeping the locos straightforward for guest engineers.

About John
John models in HO, modern era, CP and CN (with a good sprinkling of foreign power). His engineering training and fascination with how things work and how to make them work better regularly sends him happily down rabbit holes in his model railroading. He currently has three layouts in various stages of completion at home and has managed to get about three more or less “complete” in the past. He is an active member of the local model railroading community and has been a member of the RMMBC Committee for many years. He loves this hobby.
