Repainting a full size locomotive compared to a model

Rail:Repainting a full size locomotive compared to a model - Case Study CN 6520 by Al Lill and Pedro Espanosa

This clinic will include the "back story" of the history and restoration of the ex CN FP9a 6520 leading up to the repainting project, how it was managed and financed and a comparison between modelling and repainting an operational full size diesel unit in a heritage scheme. A professional will tell us how he paints a full size locomotive including the prep part which is probably the most important. In keeping with the theme of "a road less travelled", this clinic should provide some insights for modellers about the real thing..

Al Lill has been a member of the NMRA since 1965 and models Canadian National Railways in HO Scale. He is also currently Chairman of the CNRHA and was Editor of CN LINES for about 20 years. In late 2018, Al became involved in a project with the WCRA to repaint their ex CN 6520 in the 1961 - 1977 "stripes" paint scheme. The CNRHA hired Pedro Espinoza to repaint the locomotive, then in primer. Pedro has had about 20 years of experience in painting locomotives - many for Southern Rail of BC and has recently taken on a repaint project for Neptune Terminals involving a 10-year old unit which had been badly corroded.
