A backdrop should complement the model railroad, not overwhelm it or become the star of the show. We will cover basic concepts for painting sky/clouds, landscape, trees, and structures showing how anyone can do reasonable backdrop painting. Remember, any backdrop is better than no backdrop — this clinic will give you some approaches so that you can enjoy the journey.

Biography Steve is a retired lawyer now living in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island. A life member of the NMRA and PNR, Steve was the founding and incorporating member of NMRA Canada serving as President as well as on the NMRA national board from 1989 to 2000. Director of 7th Division PNR for over 20 years. He holds 7 Achievement Program Certificates, including Master Builder - Scenery and Master Builder - Prototype Models. Steve was Co-Chair of Project 374, the restoration of CPR 374 displayed at the Roundhouse in Vancouver. Steve models primarily in N Scale and his Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway featured in Great Model Railroads 1994 and in several issues of N Scale Railroading the most recently in 2018. He is co-owner of Pacific Scale Rail Ltd., a modest seller of model trains online and at train shows. Steve has painted or is currently painting backdrops on 7 layouts.
